College is supposed to prepare you for the future; it serves as a stepping stone before the real world for many young adults. However, while you're emptying your life savings into your education, and stressing over exams & papers, it's easy to forget about what happens after college. You know, when you're, like, a real adult working in the real world. At the beginning of this school year, I found myself thinking about student teaching and realized I had a pretty limited amount of choices when it comes to dressing and looking professional. I've managed to grow my professional wardrobe considerably within the past six months without breaking the bank. Here's what worked for me:
1. I Thought Realistically
This is probably the most important thing you can do in this situation. At one point in my life, I pictured myself as a teacher dressed up in dresses every day, with the cutest shoes on. However, when life finally caught up to me, I realized I couldn't really afford to buy the newest, cutest shoes and clothes. I began my search for professional wear at nowhere other than Goodwill. There, I was able to find a couple cute dresses and work pants for a low price.
2. I Shopped Smarter
Smart shopping is absolutely essential when it comes to building a large wardrobe in a short amount of time, with limited funds. One of the best ways to do this is by keeping an eye on seasonal sales. When the end of fall was approaching, and stores were preparing for their haul of winter clothes, they had massive sales on what they had left of their fall clothing. This happens at the end of each season, so being able to think with the seasons is a huge money saver!
3. I Collected The Basics
Starting with a foundation of basics is the best way to create multiple outfits with just a couple items of clothing. When I go shopping for professional wear, I often think about what I don't have. Do I have black dress pants? Check. What about a pair of printed dress pants? Nope. So, once I figure out what I need, I go out and look for it, and I don't settle for anything else. This keeps you from spending unnecessary money on things you don't need.
You'd never think that building a professional wardrobe would be such a calculated situation. However, when you're strapped for cash, sometimes the best thing you can do is plan ahead in order to save money in any way possible. If you're still unsure of where to start with your search, I took it upon myself to take some pictures of some clothing I've found within the past six months, and even included where I got it all. Best of luck!
